Search and State: Made in New York

The American cycling gear business Search and State is being featured, and we couldn’t be happier about it! The Search and State collection, which was designed by Devin O’Brien and Daniel Golden, drew our interest because to its classic aesthetic, its clean lines, and its meticulous attention to detail.

When Golden and O’Brien were both seeking for fresh sources of inspiration in their lives in 2010, they began brainstorming ideas for Search and State over lunch one day. Golden has worked in the fashion sector for the last 20 years. As a child, he raced motorcycles, which sparked his interest in the cut, materials, and design of technical gear. Golden now has over 20 years of expertise in the fashion industry. This curiosity prompted him to enroll at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, after which he was able to get a position as an assistant designer with Nautica during the brand’s formative years.

Golden’s goal in launching the company was to design a collection of clothes that he would like to wear but that were not previously available on the market. He did this by pulling inspiration from his previous experience working in the fashion business as well as his love for quality and materials. O’Brien, on the other hand, had a history in production and creative agency before joining the company. He was wanting to develop something that he was enthusiastic about after being burned out working for a large corporation.

The Search and State (SAS) series is characterized by its understated elegance, meticulous attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to quality. It’s the attention to detail in the garments’ smaller components that truly sets them apart. The distinctive two-toned appearance and feel of the SAS jerseys is achieved by a precise weaving in the fabric, which gives the jerseys their block colors (black, grey, and white/navy).

The two are quite proud of the fact that every one of their products is handcrafted in the garment district of midtown Manhattan in New York City. The fact that they can work with fabric suppliers, cutters, sewers, and so on within the space of a few city blocks means that they are able to control every step of the process. Not only do they believe in the quality of craftsmanship that comes from the history in the area, but they also believe that the history in the area contributes to the quality of the craftsmanship that comes from the area. Their S1A riding jersey, for instance, is the product of a partnership between eight different partners to assure quality at every stage of the production process.

Search & State is devoted to New York and to developing high-performance road cycling apparel with an emphasis on clean aesthetics and quality of fit. This is in contrast to many other companies, who are searching for ways to save costs in their production lines by relocating their operations abroad.
